
Join us for an artist talk and book signing with long time APA LA member, Frank Ockenfels 3, celebrating his latest book, Collaboration: Frank Ockenfels 3 X David Bowie .
Frank will be in conversation with Joe Levy, Contributing Editor at Rolling Stone and author of the book’s foreword.
Frank’s collaboration with Bowie grew from one editorial commission to a series of sixteen different photo shoots The photographs in the book span their years of collaboration from 1991 to 2006, and include portraits, sketchbooks, and contact sheets from working sessions. Together, these images capture the many facets of Bowie’s career in this time period.
The afternoon will most definitely be entertaining, insightful and inspiring as Frank shares his wealth of information, stories and personal experiences from his time with David Bowie.

Frank Ockenfels 3
Frank Ockenfels3 is a Los Angeles based photographer, director and artist, whose career has spanned four decades. He started out photographing actors, musicians, politicians for publications such as Rolling Stone, Esquire, Interview, Cream, NY Times Magazine, NY Magazine, Variety and Spin to name a few. His wide variety of subjects have included Nirvana to Barack Obama, Willie Nelson to George Clooney, Snoop Dogg to Spike Lee.
His increased exposure and distinctive style lead him to create images for over two hundred album covers. They have included REM, Bruce Springsteen, garbage, sting, Rancid, Nora Jones, Wilco, Busta Rhymes, Queen Latifa, Joshua Redman, Robbie Williams, No Doubt, Tom Waits, Sonny Rollins and David Bowie among others.
Ockenfels3 has contributed to the creation of key art for many renowned TV shows, which include American Horror Story, Breaking Bad, House of Cards, Walking Dead, Mayans, The Boys, Billy the Kid, The Americans,, Madmen and the Bear. He also has contributed to numerous feature films. Harry Potter, Thor, The Menu, Guardians of The Galaxy 3, Suicide Squad, Creed, Vice, Men in Black 3, Nightmare Alley and Blade Runner 2049 are among his many movie credits.
Frank has directed music videos for bands such as Alice in Chains, Blues Travelers, Johnny Lang, The Deftones, Better than Ezra, Santigold and Everclear. Directed commercials for clients such as Nike, Converse, K-Swiss, Canon, The New York Times and on-air promos for AMC, FX, CW, Netflix, MGM+ and Fox.
Frank Ockenfels3’s photographs, transcend traditional portraiture by incorporating elements such as ink, collage, and paint, transforming each image into a deeply personal artistic expression.

Joe Levy is a Contributing Editor at Rolling Stone, where he worked for over a decade. His writing has appeared in The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal Magazine, The Village Voice and Billboard and he has created and hosted podcasts on the music of Harry Nilsson (Final Sessions) and the Great American Songbook (Setting the Standard). He lives in New York.
